Everything should work as portraied in the post, if you get different behavior might be for something different you did, or maybe for changes in new versions. Notice I used Blender 2.8.2 and animation-nodes v2.1.

However I simply suggest to play around and observe the behavior, it will help understand the dynamics and then you can create and explore new things without issues :D
